Discussion Task 9

Did the Tortilla Curtain help you to better understand the issue of immigration and the people involved?

My ideas: Yes: - can imagine the situation of illegal Mexicans in the U.S. - the wall shows the discrimination towards them - I understand why they want to cross the border (American Dream, work,..) - book shows me how difficult it is to immigrate in the USA

Do you have any other ideas towards this task?

Marlen's ideas to that task

Linda's ideas to that task

To my mind the Mexicans all have a very hard life in America. So all people have no good words for them and speak bad about them. Even the Mexicans talk bad about the Mexicans.

Your ideas sound really good.
To my mind we never talked about immigration in school, thats why it is the first time we read about it.
Immigration is a huge problem in the USA and it will always cause trouble.

I think your ideas are well done.
You can also get to know about the hard life immigrants have (from the book). Its hard to see what problems they have to find work or something else or that they can't go to a doctor with their born child.

I'm in the same opinion like Angie. All Americans use bad words when they talked about the Mexicans.
But the book helps me too, to understand the situation with the immigrants better.

To my mind it`s wrong to say we never talk about this topic. But i think you discribed the facts right without one you talked of a wall but a curtain is no wall. It can be pulled away more easally. It´s a obvious problem the americans have and a problem you should reflect on.

To my mind it is a really good written novel. The reader can really feel how life is for illegal immigrants. So I agree to your opinion. You could compare the situation of Mexicans in America with Polish in Germany. There is no fence but they come to get work and also try to start a better life.

Hey Jenny ;)
I think your ideas are very good.
This book is very helpful to understand the problems of immigration in the USA.
Maybe you could find more examples from the book about the life of immigrants and how hard it is to survive.

There were already some really good hints for you given by the others. I'd like to add to Kristina that we don't have only Polish people here in Germany- who aren't illegals- but also illegal immigrants/ refugees. Who are they and what do we do with them?
